We kicked off the start of  “Movember” recently. Movember is Lambda Chi Alpha’s month-long awareness event for Prostate and Testicular Cancer. We have hosted BBQs and a Dodge-ball tournament with all the proceeds being donated to charity. We have raised about $800 so far. On the horizon is a Testicular/Prostate Cancer speaker,  possibly a banana split/donut sale. Most importantly about Movember, is that we are all not shaving throughout the month to raise awareness and we’re encouraging everyone else to grow their mustaches out as well! Prizes will be awarded to the best mustache!

And for the main event, Pi Lambda Zeta held its initiation ritual last night and welcomed 12 new brothers into the bond of Zeta Alpha Chi. Congratulations Pi Lambdas 96-107.

Former Grand High Pi and Grand High Phi Lynn Chipperfield gave a speech on hazing on September 21st which was widely attended by the new Associate Members and current Brothers alike.

The big brother ceremony was held on September 23rd in Whelpley Auditorium and Theta Class was finally introduced to their big brothers!

Light the Night was held on the September 24th

STLCOP Cares was held on September 25th but nobody thought to take a picture. So shame on them.

All in all, Pi Lambda Zeta has had a busy month as always.

Our High Iota John Paule hosted a rousing Risk Management seminar complete with videos from HQ and delicious Jimmy John’s Sandwiches

Our High Theta Jon Day organized our spring food drive. The neighborhoods hit were The Hill and the area around the Wise House. He also organized a clothing drive with LKS. 435 pieces of clothing were collected and donated to Goodwill (and may or may not be repurchased by next year’s AM class for their variety show performance).

Brother Davin Patel and others organized a widely attended leadership workshop  with Phi Lambda Sigma.
Also the White Rose Formal was attended by many, and Brothers Sam An and Cody Steele attended an Inner Circle retreat at headquarters.

The Award which is sponsored by Shop N’ Save Pharmacy comes with a $1,000 stipend which will come in handy as budgets get tighter every year. “We’ll definitely put this money to good use. We have a Brotherhood Retreat coming up, so that will allow us to put our minds together to find the best way to use this money in our community with some going to charity and perhaps a little bit for a rainy day. I’ve the the joy-joy down in my heart!” said Brian Scholfield, 3rd year and Chapter President.

Pi-Lambda Zeta last won the Organization of the Year Award in 2004 under the watchful eyes of High Alpha Brandon Eldridge. “It was a different time then,” said Eldridge, 5th year, “There was 19 of us when we won the award, and we all lived in the dorms. I’m proud that the tradition of winning [and rocking out] continues.”

The Watermelon Bash was held to raise money and non-perishable food for Lambda Chi Alpha’s International Philanthropic Event, the North American Food Drive, held every November. The NAFD was first held in 1993 and to-date has raised more than 27 million pounds of food for needy families across North America. The event is the largest single-day philanthropic event held by a collegiate organization ever. The proceeds of the Bash went to the Arnold Food Pantry.

Through the hard work and effort of everyone
involved, Lambda Chi Alpha raised 6,015 pounds of food!

In addition to the success of the Watermelon Bash, the Brothers of Lambda Chi Alpha were visited by KTVI – Fox 2‘s TIM EZELL (Tim’s Travels) . Tim arrived on campus at 7am and a “Mock” Watermelon Bash was held with a Live Feed directly to the morning news show in the St. Louis Area. You can view all THREE Videos HERE. As far as the High Tech side goes, I updated the new officers to reflect the most recent elections.  I changed the Event calendar and exam schedule to Excell files, but I have to fill in the blanks with our events.  I updated our chapter’s contact info (PO box, new High Alpha, chapter’s email address) and the files for download to show the new semester.  I plan on changing our poll soon as well.

I’ve fixed and updated some things.  Files for Download is restructured and files are updated (by-laws, family trees, greek council by-laws, etc).  I fixed the polls so that the archive works properly now.  After elections this Sunday, I’ll update officers.

During Christmas break (especially after the High Zeta Retreat), I’ll be making some changes – changing both the calendar‘s format and the events on it for next semester, updating the past events, a possible updating of the theme, and whatever comes up.  I ask that anyone that has comments, questions, constructive criticism for the website, from within and between the Zetas and passerbys, email me at abohn@stlcop.edu and I’ll take a look-see at how I can’t make an improvement.

I’m doing my best not to let it consume me to the point that I completely ignore other facets of my life.  School for one.  But when I ran for the office of High Kappa I never in my wildest dreams imagined that it would get into my blood like this.  And the new Kappa, AM, and Big Brother manuals that HQ put out as part of the True Brother initiative are like Kappa Crack Cocaine.  I can’t put them down! 

See, here’s the thing.  At first I expected to have a dozen or so AMs to educate on the history of Lambda Chi Alpha.  I was going to give them what they needed, teach them the creed, show them the crest, go through the timeline and then shuffle them off to Initiation and call it a day.  Now I realize my duty is to instill the ideals of this blessed Brotherhood into sixty young men so that every minute of every day the actions of every Brother shine with the immutable principles on which we were founded and on which we still stand today.  The time has come to truly make good men great, and great men excellent.

So… I gotta go.  I’ve got programming to plan and lesson plans to write.  There’s manuals to be read and meetings to schedule.  I need dates, times, locations, speakers.  No time to waste, we’ve got leaders to mold boys!  I’ve got a Brotherhood in one hand, fourteen great possibilities in the other, a Ped. under one arm, a lamp under the other, a world full of stress, a mind full of ideas, and a heart full of fire.  It’s time to Do Work!

Alright, time for a little story.  Tonight after the meeting, Scholfield decided to do some last minute training before the pizza-eating contest tomorrow by drinking as much fluid as he could in 20 minutes.  He started off by bringing out some ice cold pink lemonade.  He downed 64 oz. in less than 2 minutes (that’s 4 pounds of lemonade!) Little did we know, he was just getting started.  He followed that up by drinking four 17 oz. bottles of water over the next 14 minutes.  By the time he finished his last bottle of water, his stomach was so full it looked like he just swallowed a watermelon. For those of you doing the math at home, that’s 132 oz. of fluid (that’s over a gallon… 8+ pounds of fluid) in about 16 minutes. 

Well he kept those 132 ounces in his stomach for about 7 seconds… Then it started coming back up, and it came up a lot quicker than it went down.  Scholfield looked like ole faithful for the next few minutes as the gallon of water/lemonade/some chicken he ate for dinner made its way from his stomach out to the pavement. 

After that amazing display of intestinal (well in this case it was more stomachal) fortitude and incredible stomach capacity, I know one thing going into tomorrow regardless of who’s competing in the pizza-eating contest: I’ve got my money on Scholfield.

It’s something instilled in you over time. It’s cultured through experiences. It’s grown through trials and tribulations. It grows better through time, much like wine. It can’t be explained…it can only be experienced.

I hope that every young man can experience true Brotherhood in their life.

Like most chapters, it is a time full of anticipation: the Rush of a new Recruitment class; our Epsilon class will be dropping their bids on Monday.  Since this is my first time on this side, along with the other 14 Brothers of the Delta class(36-50), it is an entirely new experience.  I now look back on the past year on my AM period, initiation, and continuing membership Brothership in this ever-growing Zeta.  It is exciting to me to think of those who will be entering the bond and all they will learn and experience.

And I hope that, if I do become a Big Brother, I do half as well for my Little as mine did for me.

Next things on the docket:
1. Get all of our pictures uploaded to Flickr. The login/pass has been shared with all Brothers, so the pictures should get on there by the end of the year. As they are, random photos will be displayed on the right frame with each page load. Visitors can also click the pictures and view the entire album. Done – I’ve uploaded my photos – just need everyone else to follow suit.
2. Create a “Brother Blog” page where inspired Brothers can make posts, share stories, and upload other photos to share with visitors, parents, Brothers from other Zetas, and alumni everywhere. I will build the page and get the ball rolling, getting other Brothers to follow suit may be a little harder to do… Done – will be navigatable by the “categories” heading on the right side bar either by name of Brother or “Brother Blog” category. We just have to ensure every post is tagged correctly.
3. Hunt down every other Lambda Chi Alpha Zeta and Alumni Chapter website in the world and add their website URL to the “Links” dropdown in the right frame. This feat will likely take until the end of the year – especially since the website that already had the work down has disappeared. This is done. Wikipedia made this very easy!
4. Take any and all suggestions and implement those ideas.

Anyway, over the next month or so, the old site will be ported over to the new website. It’s unlikely that everything will survive the trip, but we’ll see what we can do! It’s gonna be a learning experience for everyone, but this website could really benefit the chapter in the future…
